Qualcomm Snapdragon vs Mediatek – Processor is one of the most important parts of Smartphone‘s Hardware as mostly everything depends on Processor while performing any task, from gaming to calling. Today, mostly every smartphone has a processor either of Qualcomm Snapdragon or Mediatek. Qualcomm Snapdragon has already on a peak in their Segment and MediaTek is climbing step by Step on a Success tree. A System on Chip (SoC) which can be as small as a coin does wonder when combined with adequate software. While Qualcomm is more famous in the United States and Europe, MediaTek has slowly captured a relatively larger market share in South Asian markets. However, what exactly are the factors which make processors from these two manufacturers different and unique in their own sense?
Firstly Let’s Introduce both Competitors Qualcomm Snapdragon vs MediaTek :-
Qualcomm Snapdragon is a suite of the system on chip (SoC) semiconductor products designed and marketed by Qualcomm for mobile devices. The Snapdragon central processing unit (CPU) uses the ARM RISC instruction set, and a single SoC may include multiple CPU cores, a graphics processing unit (GPU), a wireless modem, and other software and hardware to support a smartphone’s global positioning system (GPS), camera, gesture recognition and video. Snapdragon semiconductors are embedded in devices of various systems, including Android and Windows Phone devices. They are also used for netbooks, in cars, wearable devices, and other devices.
Snapdragon processors are manufactured by Qualcomm, an American company headquartered in San Diego, California. Snapdragon processors are known for its high quality and high performance, and they are used in smartphones and other mobile devices. Generally, you will find Snapdragon processors in mid to high-end smartphones or phones from well-known brands. Snapdragon range of processors includes a single core, dual core, quad core, hexa core and octa-core processors.
MediaTek is a fabless semiconductor company headquartered in Taiwan. It is relatively new in manufacturing processors for smartphones & tablets but has gained wide popularity and reorganization in smartphones industry because of their cost-effective processors. MediaTek processors are generally cheap and are they are widely used in a budget to mid-range smartphones. MediaTek range of processors includes a single core, dual core, quad core, hexacore, octa core and deca core processors.
Now, Let’s Start with complete Comparison of Qualcomm Snapdragon vs Mediatek
While most of the chipsets from MediaTek focus on more power, Qualcomm chipsets are more about efficiency. This is why smartphones, and especially budget smartphones running MediaTek processors would easily outgun the ones running its Qualcomm equivalent. However, a lot of times more power in MediaTek processors came with the unnecessary compromise on battery life and overheating issues but also have a low price tag and establishing a brand. Let’s see which one wins the battle, is it Qualcomm Snapdragon or Mediatek.
Let’s Start the battle, Qualcomm Snapdragon VS MediaTek. Let’s see who sweep the stakes 🙂
Mediatek – The MediaTek chipsets are known to be more power draining and result in less battery life. Now they are optimizing their processors to be more power efficient but still lags behind their competition in terms of battery life.
Qualcomm Snapdragon – Snapdragon chipsets are best in terms of power efficiency compared to all other chipsets.
Both are climbing to increase battery efficiency, but here, Qualcomm Snapdragon takes a lead.
Performance – [ Qualcomm Snapdragon vs Mediatek ]
Performance wise Mediatek processors are very good.Due to the availability of extra cores, MediaTek processors can handle intensive and heavy tasks and they are very good at multi-tasking.But we can see all this practically if we have sufficient RAM. Yes, more cores demand more Ram to give the best performance.
Performance wise Qualcomm Snapdragon also performs really well. In multi-tasking, gaming, handling heavy and intensive tasks they are very good.
But is we take an overall performance comparison, Qualcomm Snarpdrgon surely takes a lead due to it’s more powerful high end processors.
GPU [ Graphics Proccessing Unit ]
Mediatek – Coming to graphics, Mediatek employs Mali graphics which is a third party graphics vendor (So graphics architecture is different from CPU and its performance may not match with CPU). It is really important to match the performances of CPU and GPU (graphics) so that the whole chipset performs efficiently and effectively.
Qualcomm Snapdragon – Coming to graphics, they manufacture their own graphics called Adreno Graphics and incorporate into their chips. So here the performance of CPU and GPU are matched.
Note:- A notable difference which plays a crucial role if you are a graphic intensive user is GPU. Both the companies use a different set of GPUs (Graphic Processing Unit) with their range of advantages and disadvantages. MediaTek processors are generally coupled with Mali GPU which is produced by ARM while Qualcomm combines in its Adreno lineup of GPUs. Now, this is where things get interesting. Mali GPUs are in no way inferior to Adreno. However, they are easier to develop games on and hence, developers always dive in for Adreno GPUs. Further, if you are into Rooting, or getting root access of your device, the number of developers hanging around for a Qualcomm processor-based smartphone will be much more than MediaTek’s.
Here, from my point of view, both are performing well, as both are progressing themselves for being the best Among all. So here, it’s draw.
Price Segment – [ Qualcomm Snapdragon vs Mediatek ]
However, one problem with Qualcomm processor was that they were a bit too expensive for OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) to blend into their smartphones and yet sell them at lower prices. This is where MediaTek targeted and brought in its relatively cheaper range of processors. Chinese smartphone manufacturers soon spotted the potential and started manufacturing smartphones based on MediaTek processors. There was the time when a flood of budget MediaTek based smartphones hit the Indian shore. Qualcomm, on the other hand, was still the king when mid range or flagship smartphones came into the picture.
If you are going to buy a smartphone in the price range which is less than $220-$240 then You will get a Mediatek processor and If you are getting Qualcomm in this range than I have to say Not to buy it because In this price range Mediatek processors are good choice but if your budget is quite high and has price range from $250-$300 and even more than You will definitely get a Qualcomm Snapdragon processors in your Smartphone and if you are getting Mediatek than Don’t choose Mediatek.
— So, in low end price segment, Mediatek Processors takes a lead.
— In mid Range price segment, Both Mediatek and Qualcomm Snapdragon are best choices, but Snapdragon takes a lead in this segment
— In high end price Segment, Sraight- Qualcomm Snapdragon is better in Mediatek.
